After a water tank is cleaned, three kinds of waste are left: sludge from the floor, dirty wash water, and chlorinated rinse water. All three should go into a sewer drain, in a controlled way, and none of it onto the street, into a storm drain, onto a garden or into the ground beside the tank. Sludge that is too thick to pump should be bagged and sent out with solid waste.
This is the part of the job customers rarely watch, and the part informal cleaners most often get wrong. This guide explains what the waste is, why careless dumping matters, what the rules are, and how a proper service handles it.
Water Tank Cleaning Services in Karachi
A full tank cleaning has six steps: drain the tank, remove the sludge, pressure-wash the walls and floor, vacuum out the waste water, disinfect, and rinse. Four of those six steps produce waste. A standard house, with both tanks, takes 2 to 4 hours. The process is described on our service procedure page.
We recommend cleaning every 6 months, which means every household produces this waste twice a year, and a company doing four or five houses a day handles a great deal of it. Multiply that by a city of more than 20 million people and disposal stops being a detail.
Waste Generation during Water Tank Cleaning
| Waste | What is in it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Leftover tank water | Stale water, usually harmless | Volume. A full tank is thousands of litres. |
| Sludge | Silt, sand, rust, rotting organic matter, bacteria, sometimes sewage residue | Carries the germs you are trying to get rid of. Smells. Blocks drains if dumped in bulk. |
| Wash water | Biofilm, algae and fine sediment blasted off the walls | High in bacteria and organic matter |
| Scale and descaler residue | Calcium deposits, mild acid if a descaler was used | Acidic until diluted or rinsed |
| Chlorinated rinse water | Chlorine at disinfection strength | Toxic to fish and plants at this concentration |
| Solid debris | Dead insects, lizards or birds, leaves, plastic, broken fittings | Health hazard if left lying about |
| Industrial tank residues | Depends on what the tank held: oils, process chemicals, treatment sludge | May be hazardous waste under the law |
How much sludge there is depends on how long the tank has been left. Six months of silt is a thin layer. Several years of it can fill buckets. See the dangers of neglecting tank cleaning.
Why Careless Disposal Is a Problem
- It spreads the contamination. Sludge tipped in the lane dries, turns to dust and blows back into open tanks and kitchens, or washes into the next house’s underground tank with the first rain.
- It can come straight back. Dirty water poured around the underground tank seeps down and re-enters through any crack. See detecting and preventing leaks.
- It blocks drains. A slug of silt and sand settles in the nearest gully and causes the next overflow.
- It kills plants and aquatic life. The WHO’s technical note on tank cleaning warns that disinfecting water contains a high concentration of chlorine and should not be disposed of in rivers and ponds, because it may kill fish and plant life (WHO Technical Note 3).
- It adds to an overloaded system. Karachi generates about 472 million gallons of sewage a day and treats little more than a tenth of it (Aaj News). What goes into storm drains and nullahs reaches the sea untreated. See the impact of industrialization on water quality in Karachi.
The Legal Framework
The main law is the Sindh Environmental Protection Act, 2014 (text). It prohibits discharging waste and effluent in amounts or concentrations above the Sindh Environmental Quality Standards, restricts the handling of hazardous substances, and gives the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency the power to investigate and penalise polluters.
What that means in practice:
- Household tank waste is domestic waste water. Sent to the sewer, it is handled like any other household waste water. Dumped in a street or open plot, it is a nuisance and a pollution offence.
- Commercial and industrial tank waste is the responsibility of the business that owns the tank. Residues from process tanks, chemical tanks and effluent tanks may be hazardous and must go through the site’s own waste arrangements.
- The service provider shares responsibility for what it removes and where it puts it.
The broader set of rules on water quality is explained in government regulations on water quality in Karachi.
Proper Waste Disposal Methods
Leftover water
Plan the job for when the tank is nearly empty. Clean water that must be drained can go to the garden or be used for washing floors before the work starts. This is the easiest waste to avoid. See the best time to clean your water tank.
Sludge
- Pump or vacuum thin sludge to a sewer manhole or gully that leads to the sewer, at a rate the drain can carry, with plenty of water.
- Lift thick or sandy sludge out in buckets, drain off the water, bag the solids and send them out with solid waste.
- Never flush sludge down through the house plumbing, and never leave it on the roof or the porch.
Wash water
Vacuum it out as it is produced and discharge it to the sewer. On a roof, do not let it run down the rainwater pipes, which usually lead to the street.
Descaler residue
Rinse the tank until no acid remains, and send the rinse water to the sewer with plenty of dilution. Acid residue must never meet chlorine. See dealing with hard water stains and deposits.
Chlorinated rinse water
- Discharge it to the sewer, where it is diluted and the chlorine is quickly used up by the organic matter in sewage.
- Do not send it to a storm drain, a nullah, a pond, a soak pit or a planted area.
- Where a large volume of strong solution has to be released, as with big commercial tanks, let it stand in the open so the chlorine dissipates, or neutralise it first. Sodium thiosulphate is the standard dechlorinating chemical.
Using the surface method of disinfection, in which chlorine is applied to the cleaned walls instead of filling the tank with solution, cuts the volume of chlorinated waste to a fraction. See how to disinfect a water tank after cleaning.
Solid debris and dead animals
Remove with gloves, double-bag, and dispose of with household waste. Disinfect the tank afterwards. See bird contamination in rooftop tanks.
Industrial tanks
Find out what the tank has held before any work begins. Process residues are segregated and handed over under the factory’s own environmental procedures. We agree this at the free survey, before the job is booked, and work under the client’s site rules.
Benefits of Proper Waste Disposal
- The cleaning actually protects you. The germs leave the property instead of moving ten feet.
- Clean surroundings. No stinking puddle in the porch or silt on the roof.
- Working drains.
- No dead plants, and no harm to pets that drink from puddles.
- Good relations with neighbours.
- Compliance. Businesses can show their auditors where the waste went.
The Role of Water Tank Cleaning Service Providers
A professional service should:
- Arrive with the equipment to contain waste: a pump, a wet vacuum, and enough hose to reach a proper drain. See technology in modern tank cleaning.
- Find the right drain before starting, and confirm it leads to the sewer.
- Use the correct chemical dose, so there is less to dispose of. See eco-friendly products for tank cleaning.
- Leave nothing on site. No sludge, no puddles, no empty chemical containers.
- Protect its workers with gloves, boots and goggles when handling sludge and chlorine. See our safety page.
- Follow a commercial client’s waste procedures and record what was done.
This is how our crews work. Waste water and sludge are pumped to a proper drain and not left on site, chemicals are kept in labelled containers and mixed to the stated ratio, and water containing disinfectant is directed to a proper drain. The products are listed on our cleaning chemicals page. Commercial and industrial clients receive a cleaning certificate and a tax invoice for their records.
Questions to ask before you book anyone
- Where will the sludge go?
- Do you bring a vacuum, or do you sweep the dirty water to the drain hole?
- What chemical do you use, and how do you get rid of it?
- Will you leave the porch and roof clean?

Challenges in Waste Disposal
| Challenge | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| No sewer connection nearby, or a blocked one | Carry waste by hose to the nearest working manhole. Clear the blockage first if it is on the property. |
| Rooftop tanks far from any drain | Vacuum the waste into containers or run a hose down to a bathroom floor drain, not the rainwater pipe. |
| Very heavy sludge in long-neglected tanks | Remove as solids in bags instead of washing it all into the drain. |
| Underground tanks with no drain point | Pump out. Everything has to be lifted. |
| Customers who want it done cheaply and fast | Explain that dumping in the lane brings the dirt back. Proper disposal is part of our standard rate. |
| Informal cleaners with no equipment | Ask the questions above before hiring. |
| Industrial residues of unknown composition | Survey first. Do not start until the contents are identified. |
Best Practices for Effective Waste Disposal
- Reduce first. Clean every 6 months so there is less sludge, and clean when the tank is low so there is less water. See how often to clean your water tank. More ways to save water are in rainwater harvesting and tank cleaning for sustainable living.
- Plan the route. Know which drain will be used before the tank is opened.
- Contain as you go. Vacuum waste water instead of letting it spread.
- Separate solids from liquids.
- Keep acid and chlorine apart at every stage, including in the drain. Rinse between them.
- Dilute. Run clean water behind sludge and chlorinated rinse.
- Clean the site. Wash down the porch or roof and close the tank.
- Wash hands and tools with soap after handling sludge.
If You Clean a Small Tank Yourself
- Use up the water first.
- Scoop sludge into a bucket, let it settle, pour the water down a bathroom drain and bag the solids.
- Send wash water and chlorinated rinse water down a bathroom floor drain or toilet, a little at a time. If your house uses a septic tank, add chlorinated water slowly and well diluted, because a large dose harms the bacteria the septic tank relies on.
- Never pour it on the garden or into the street.
- Wear gloves and wash up afterwards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can tank sludge be used as fertiliser in the garden?
No. It may contain sewage bacteria, and after cleaning it may contain chlorine. Bag it and dispose of it with solid waste.
Is it safe to drain chlorinated water into the sewer?
Yes. In the sewer it is diluted and the chlorine is used up almost immediately. It should not go into storm drains, ponds or soil.
Why should I care where the waste goes if my tank is clean?
Because waste dumped near the house finds its way back, through dust, flies, floodwater or cracks in the underground tank.
Do you take the waste away?
Waste water and sludge are pumped to a proper drain and nothing is left on site. For industrial tanks, disposal of process residues is agreed with the client before the job.
